Hammurabi Human Rights Organization carried out the second workshop of the second edition of the project regarding Capacity Building and Promoting awareness of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities during Saturday 11th , November of the year 2023 and over 4 hours from 9 am to 1pm.

 The agenda of this workshop includes:

A welcoming speech delivered by Mr. William Warda, the project manager to the participants while Mrs. Pascale Warda addressed the definition of human rights and the guarantees available in the International Bill of Human Rights and international human rights law, focusing on what was stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, where she focused on a clear comparison between this declaration and the noble purpose according to the charter of the United Nations, and the importance of this relationship to establish values, principles and field standards to achieve the preservation of human dignity and guarantee the rights to work, housing, education, freedom of expression, assembly and demonstration...etc., ensuring the achievement of freedom and justice.

Mrs. Pascale Warda in her speech introduced number of applications that guarantee these rights and the challenges they face and subsequently allocated part of the workshop to the Authority of People with Disabilities along with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, where Dr. Yasin Kathem Al-Sudani addressed the Law No. 38 of the year 2013, covering the rights of persons with disabilities providing them with practical guarantees in the interest of protecting their human dignity and rehabilitation and to open the way to contribute in the construction of the Iraqi State on the path to the development of their civil contribution; He also addressed the responsibility of eight Iraqi ministries, along with the Supreme Judicial Council, to implement the provisions of this Law.

 

Mr. Omar Farouq Al-Hafith, one of the cadres of the Ministry - Office of the Minister of Labor, took turns talking about the tasks performed, answering number of questions raised by some of the attendees. This was preceded by the screening of a film on the rights of people with disabilities that Hammurabi Organization prepared as part of Its achievements in the first nine workshops of this project and the 2006 International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the most notably combating all forms of negative discrimination, to achieve spatial, social and functional integration of the disabled, ensuring a decent life for them, working to create cultural concepts and values that consider disability as a part of Human diversity and nature. The project manager open a debate on the rights of people with disabilities and the problems faces by their families in obtaining these rights.

 

It is to be mentioned that the workshop was held at the headquarters of the Fraternity of Love (Caritas Iraq) in Baghdad, in cooperation with Hammurabi Human Rights Organization, the Caritas Organization, and the partnership of the John Paul II Foundation (FJPII), with funding of the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development. The number of attendees at the workshop reached 27 male and female including 20 women and 7 men.
