Hammurabi Human Rights Organization issued a statement marking International Women's Day, emphasizing that women across the East and West represent voices that cannot be silenced despite the serious challenges they face in many parts of the world.
The statement noted that this year’s commemoration comes amid difficult political and security conditions, as ongoing wars and conflicts in several parts of the Middle East have prevented women from organizing the usual activities and public events traditionally associated with the occasion. These conflicts continue to inflict severe humanitarian consequences, including civilian casualties and the widespread destruction of infrastructure.
The organization highlighted that women and children are among the most affected victims of these conflicts, stressing that the continuation of wars and the use of weapons undermine opportunities for peace and weaken humanitarian and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding. In this regard, the organization called on world leaders to prioritize peaceful rationality and diplomatic solutions rather than the language of arms, emphasizing that dialogue remains the most effective path toward ending wars and protecting the sovereignty and well-being of peoples.
The statement also addressed the situation of women in Iraq, noting that the targeting of women leaders and activists represents another form of war against women, including assassinations and threats aimed at silencing defenders of human rights. The organization stressed that such practices constitute serious violations of fundamental rights and freedoms and require decisive measures to ensure the protection of women and safeguard their dignity.
Furthermore, the organization underlined the importance of adhering to international standards on women's rights, particularly the provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979, which constitutes a key international instrument for guaranteeing gender equality and combating discrimination against women in all spheres of life.
In conclusion, Hammurabi Human Rights Organization reaffirmed that building stable and peaceful societies cannot be achieved without respecting women's rights and protecting their dignity, calling for global solidarity to extinguish the flames of war and promote a culture of peace and cooperation among peoples.
