Hammurabi Organization participates in a workshop to promote environmental awareness with the participation of official bodies and experts

In the framework of supporting the efforts to promote environmental awareness, Hammurabi Human Rights Organization participated in an interactive workshop entitled "Environmental literacy: towards a sustainable future" within the activities of the National Youth Development Initiative.

 

The workshop held on Saturday, 2025/3/29, at the headquarters of the Department of Scientific Welfare.

 

The organization was represented by Mrs. Pascale Warda, Chairwoman of the organization and the lawyer Hussein Al-Tai, member of the organization.

 

The workshop was organized by the team of "Women of Mesopotamia" in cooperation with the Supreme Council for Youth and the Department of Non-Governmental Organizations, and hosted by the Department of Scientific Welfare aimed to promote social responsibility and spread environmental awareness among young people.

 

The first session of the workshop was moderated by attorney Tamara Al-Dulaimi and was attended by representatives from number of ministries and official institutions, including the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the National Security Advisory, in addition to public figures, environmental experts, and a number of experts and officials who addressed the most prominent environmental challenges facing Iraq, including:

 

 

  • Mr. Jawad Al-Khaikani, Director of the Energy, Water, and Environment Department at the National Security Advisory, who spoke about climate extremism and the challenges associated with it, stressing that the Nahrain Center is open to all parties seeking to serve the nation

 

Directorate at the Ministry of Environment, who discussed gas emissions resulting from climate extremes, explaining that the Ministry is working to launch strategies to address agricultural and water issues.

 

  • Mrs. Miad Hato, Assistant Director General of the Planning and Follow-up Department at the Ministry of Water Resources, who reviewed the Ministry’s efforts in establishing new dams to reach remote areas and address the problem of desertification.

 

  • Colonel Mustafa Abdul Hassan, Director of the Environmental Protection Police in Baghdad, Karkh, who pointed to the great waste in water use within Iraqi families, and the radioactive pollution present in Basra.

 

  • Mrs. Elaf Thier,a trainer at the German Cooperation Agency, who provided insights on international cooperation in promoting environmental awareness.

 

The second session was moderated by Mrs. Nagwan Shakir, to discuss important themes relating to the protection of the environment and climate. A number of experts made important interventions, including:

 

 

  • Dr. Saddam Qahtan, a member of the climate negotiating delegation, spoke about his role in protecting the environment and climate and highlighting Iraq’s negotiating efforts in this area.

 

  • Dr. Khaled Mohammed, Assistant Director of a Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, who discussed the environmental challenges facing the agricultural sector and ways to develop it.

 

  • Dr. Magida Bader, Head of the Monitoring Division at the Ministry of Agriculture, who reviewed the importance of environmental monitoring in preserving agricultural resources.

 

  • Mr. Saad Ismail, Chairman of Tamkeen Organization for Development and Services, who provided insights on the role of civil society organizations in supporting environmental sustainability and sustainable development.

 

The workshop witnessed a wide interaction of attendees, where discussion and interventions were opened after each session, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and ehance understanding of the environmental issues raised.

 

At the end of the event, certificates were distributed to the participants in appreciation of their effective contributions to promoting environmental awareness.
