The Hammurabi Human Rights Organization expresses its profound concern and strong condemnation following the issuance of a statement by Front Line Defenders regarding the assassination of Iraqi woman human rights defender Yanar Mohammed.
According to the statement, Yanar Mohammed, co-founder and director of the Organisation of Women's Freedom in Iraq, was killed on 2 March 2026 in an armed attack in northern Baghdad. She was widely recognized for her longstanding efforts to protect women from gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, trafficking, and so-called “honour killings,” and for her unwavering advocacy for equality and secular civic values in Iraq.
Hammurabi Human Rights Organization views this crime as a grave escalation targeting human rights defenders and women’s rights activists in Iraq. The organization underscores the urgent need to ensure accountability, safeguard fellow activists, and uphold Iraq’s obligations under international human rights law to protect those who work peacefully in defense of fundamental freedoms.
The Organization affirms its solidarity with the family, colleagues, and partners of Yanar Mohammed, and reiterates the imperative of conducting an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and to prevent further acts of violence against human rights defenders.
