- Taghrid Adris: The law should reflect that we are all Iraqis, and every one of us has the right to live in dignity regardless of our religion, race, language, or other affiliations".
The Hammurabi Human Rights Organization participated in a discussion session on reviewing and discussing the draft law on protecting the rights of minorities in Iraq.
The session was held on Sunday, March 23, 2025, as part of activities organized by the Alliance Of Iraqi Minorities Network in cooperation with the Mandean Cultural Association at its headquarters in Ankawa, Erbil.
The two-hour session, attended by an elite of intellectuals, consultants, and representatives of political parties and civil society organizations, shed light on the provisions and concepts included in the draft and their consistency with the needs of minorities and their aspirations for a more prosperous and stable future.
Participants emphasized on the importance of this law in promoting and protecting the rights of minorities and their effective role in building Iraqi society. This is achieved by drafting a solid law that incorporates the vision of minorities themselves and reflects their aspirations. This draft law will then be submitted to the relevant committees in the Iraqi Council of Representatives for a second reading, followed by voting and approval. This will ensure the rights of all components of Iraqi society and emphasize the importance of equality and social justice.
The session included interventions, discussions, and the exchange of views and experiences, as well as the participants serious contributions to formulate a shared vision that should be included in the law to ensure a more equitable and inclusive future for all and to promote justice and equality in society.
Participating on behalf of the Hammurabi Organization were Mrs. Taghrid Adris, Responsible of the Erbil Branch of the organization; Miss. Nadia Butti, a member of the Board of Directors; and members of the General Body, Mrs. Wafaa Al-Hassan, Dr. Samia Youssef, Mrs. Ilham Ismail, and Mrs. Zena Tariq.
It is to be mentioned that the draft law to protect the rights of minorities in Iraq, which has been defended by the Alliance Of Iraqi Minority Network and its affiliated organizations, especially the Hammurabi Organization, for years, is a decisive step towards building peace and stability in the country and an important path to promoting pluralism and social justice in the country, says Dr.Samia Youssef, a member of the General Board of the Hammurabi Organization to Nergal News Network "This work also represents a historic opportunity to correct historical injustice towards minorities and build a more inclusive and just Iraqi society, and the success of its implementation depends on political will and societal support."
Mrs. Zena Tariq, a member of the General Board of Hammurabi Organization says, ""The essence of this law lies in making every Iraqi in Iraq feel that he is a true and authentic 'citizen' with dignity and rights. He feels the fact that "we are diverse but equal".
Mrs. Taghrid Adris, head of the organization's Erbil branch, said, "The law should reflect the statement that we are all Iraqis, and each one of us has the right to live in dignity regardless of his religion, race, language, or other affiliations".
